Research Themes

Here are brief summaries of my research themes. Please contact me if you would like to know more.

Ubiquitous Computing and HCI

Using primarily qualitative methods (video-based observation, conversation analysis), I research the ways in which people can generate and maintain a ‘sense of community’ through the use of sensors, interfaces and interaction.

Most of my work in this area to date has been done at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan.

Science Engagement and Cafe Scientifique

E-mail Print PDF

"Communication of science" is perhaps a misunderstanding of what often happens when scientists and non-scientists talk in different settings. I am conducting research in alternative methods of expert-lay communication, and am working to put these in place in Japan. My focus is primarily 'Cafe Scientifique' (and related movements), an internationally growing movement of debate and discussion meetings held informally in cafes and wine-bars. Information [in japanese] can be found in the report I co-authored, titled A New “Sexy” Interface between Science and Society: A Report on the Café Scientifique, UK.

I have given several presentations on science cafes related to the situation in Japan, co-organise Cafe Scientifique Tokyo, regulary advise on the topic, and am writing an article as you read this page.

Gender and Technology

E-mail Print PDF

I am engaged in studying the connections and co-construction of gender and technologies. Of particular interest are the relations of 'public' technologies and the 'doing' of gender and community. As new innovative technologies continue to pervade into more and more areas of our lives they become part of the gendering of spaces and places that we occupy. Exploring the processes at work here is at the heart of my research into gender and sexuality.
